Abstract. Introduction. The 1853 Ak-Mechet Expedition was a pivotal moment in the Russian Empire’s advance into Central Asia, aimed at consolidating its position in the region and weakening the influence of the Khoqand Khanate. The fortress of Ak-Mechet, a key stronghold of the Khoqandis in the lower Syrdarya region, held strategic significance for controlling the Kazakh steppes and trade routes. The expedition’s success was not solely due to the military superiority of Russian forces but was also facilitated by the active involvement of Kazakh informants, who provided crucial intelligence on the political and military situation in the Khoqand Khanate. Materials. This study is based on archival documents from the Russian State Military-Historical Archive, the Central State Archive of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the State Archive of the Orenburg Region. Analysis. The article examines the role of Kazakh informants in ensuring the success of the Ak-Mechet Expedition. Based on archival materials, including correspondence between Russian military officials and reports on events in Central Asia, the study analyzes how Kazakh informants gathered information on the strength of the fortress garrison, the condition of its fortifications, and the internal political climate within the Khoqand Khanate. Special attention is given to the organization of information gathering by the Orenburg administration and the role of the Kazakh tribal elite in supplying intelligence. Results. The findings indicate that the success of the Ak-Mechet Expedition was largely dependent on the intelligence provided by Kazakh informants. Their contributions enabled Russian forces to plan and execute the military campaign with minimal losses. Kazakh informants not only contributed to the expedition’s strategic planning but also actively engaged in disinformation efforts, significantly weakening the fortress’s defenses. Collaboration between Russian authorities and Kazakh elites was one of the key factors in the expedition’s success, underscoring the importance of local alliances in military campaigns. This case study offers a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of Russian expansion in Central Asia, moving beyond traditional narratives of military superiority to highlight the role of local actors in shaping imperial strategies.

Key words: Ak-Mechet Expedition, Kazakh informants, Russian Empire, Khoqand Khanate, Central Asia, local collaboration.
