Abstract. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the birth of V.Ya. Maul, a renowned Russian researcher of the history of mass popular movements and the psychology of their participants. His focus was on the cultural aspect of the Pugachev Rebellion and other mass popular movements. V.Ya. Maul viewed the concept of the Russian rebellion, which is traditional for Russian historical thought, from a fundamentally new perspective as an expression of the culture of Russian society. V.Ya. Maul proposed a fundamentally new method for studying these events, aimed at understanding the person and society that rose up in a rebellion, paying attention to the psychology of the impostors and their followers. As a result of his research on the Chigirin conspiracy of 1877, V.Ya. Maul revealed the fact that the revolutionary intellectuals did not understand the psychology of the people.
