Abstract. Introduction. In line with the social history of the outskirts of the Russian state, the growth of military land ownership in a remote area of the southern borderland – in Oskol County, in the period after the Troubles before the initial stage of construction of the Belgorod line – is studied. For the first time, the dynamics of land development in a county populated almost exclusively by the service class are analysed. Methods and materials. The research is based on the application of comparative historical and problem-chronological methods and a systematic approach. It is based on the documents of the Pomestny Prikaz – the patrol and scribe books of the Oskol County, which allow us to study land ownership and land development at the level of two chronological sections: in 1615 and 1643. Analysis. The most important land indicators are analysed in comparison of chronological sections at the level of local estates, settlements, camps, and counties to identify factors and trends in the growth of service land ownership and land development in the context of administrativeterritorial transformations. Results. It has been established that the expansion of the fund of service lands was due to an increase in the number of Oskol service corporations, while government policy after 1615 did not envisage the expansion of land rights of local boyar children. Demographic processes led to the development of the economic potential of the owner’s yard, which, coupled with the beginning of peasant settlement of the county, ensured a continuous increase in the ploughing of local lands. Funding. The study was supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation (project No. 24-68-00011, https://rscf.ru/project/24-68-00011/) on the basis of the Bunin Yelets State University.
Key words: southern counties, 17th century, scribal books, land ownership, service class.
