Abstract. The author demonstrates the possibilities of the use of oral historical sources in the field ethnographic research, as well as analyzes them within the context of revealing the mechanisms of Don Cossacks’ adaptation to crises of the XX century.

Key words: microhistory, oral history, field ethnographic research, mechanisms of ethnocultural adaptation to crises, folk mythmaking.
