Abstract. Ancient written sources allow reconstructing the ethnic map of Europe in the last century BC – the first century AD, which appears under the toponym of Scythia; beginning with the work of Claudius Ptolemy the aforementioned territory assigned the name of European Sarmatia and Asiatic Sarmatia. Based on the detailed analysis of the data of different authors one can trace the movement and localization of various Sarmatia tribes and tribal alliances in the west, and their involvement in the political processes of antiquity and their complete disappearance from the historical arena.
Key words: Strabo, Aors, Yazygs, Roksolans, Pomponius Mela, Pliny the Elder, Alan, European Sarmatia.
