Abstract. The uprise of terrorism in the Republic of India in the 2nd half of the 20th century was caused by the plexus of different political, ethnic, religious and ideological factors. This article analyses the main kinds of contemporary terrorism, which India faced after gaining its independence.

Key words: terrorism, history of India, ethnic identity, separatism, ethnic and religious extremism, nationalism.
