Abstract. The beginning of the 19th century marks foundation of the Russian national education system. At the stage of its development gymnasium education faced a number of problems as including financing educational institutions, professional training of teachers, providing students with teachers’ manuals, lack of premises.

Key words: gymnasium, organization, financing, teacher, student.
