Abstract. Introduction. The publication is devoted to a stage in the history of one of the industrial enterprises of pre-war Leningrad – the Garage Electrical Equipment Plant, a significant part of whose workforce consisted of blind and visually impaired people. Methods and materials. The author identified a number of documents in the funds of the Central State Archive of Historical and Political Documents of St. Petersburg and the Central State Archive of St. Petersburg that made it possible to reconstruct the history of the plant from 1934 to 1941. Analysis. The plant, which previously produced beds and shoes, was reorganized to produce electric motors and special electrical equipment. In the six pre-war years, the plant’s director M.S. Chamaev turned the plant into a promising electrical engineering enterprise that made it possible to carry out social adaptation of those who lost their sight during the Soviet-Finnish War. In August 1941, the plant was included in the program for the production of the Degtyarev submachine gun and ammunition; the blind mastered new technological operations in a short time. Results. Despite the efforts made by M.S. Chamaev to organize new military production, a clash occurred between the director and the party leadership of Leningrad, as a result of which the director himself, the secretary of the party committee, and the chief engineer of the plant were fired; the plant ceased operations until May 1942.
