Abstract. The article deals with an insufficiently explored subject in the history of the Jacobite movement. The author analyses the plot of cottish and English nobles which took place at the end of 1690 against English king William III the Orange, who came to power during the Glorious Revolution. The main purpose of the conspirators was to restore the former king James II Stuart to the throne. The aim of the article is to determine the causes, the real scope of the plot and the political forces involved in this conspiracy, and to assert the range of the Preston plot threat to the crown.

Key words: plot, Restoration, intervention, Jacobites, king William III the Orange, dethroned monarch James II Stuart.
