Abstract. Introduction. Today, the West attempts to hold NATO accountable for issues that extend far beyond the alliance’s geographical and functional responsibilities, similar to the situation in the 2000s–2010s. This issue is crucial for establishing a West-orientated global order. Methods and materials. The goal is to explore the strategies of the 2000s–2010s and, since the mid-2020s, the geographical globalisation of NATO’s activity. The concept of securitisation is used in the article. The actor (establishment of Western democracies) convinces the audience (the societies) that the defence of the object (the Euro-Atlantic community’s countries) is impossible without increasing the power of NATO and noticeable geographic diversification of its activities to containment and throwing back opponents (Russia; also Iran and China). Previously, the actor had proved to the audience the danger of instability threats from conflict zones in Asia and Africa but had failed to provide protection and had searched for new challenges to deter. Analysis. In the 1990s in the Balkans, NATO tested strategic activity outside the zone of responsibility. Taking into account this experience, in the 2000s – 2010s, the Alliance had been trying to position itself as a security provider for the countries of origin of the armed conflict in North Africa and the Near East. The features and reasons for the unsuccessful implementation of this strategy are revealed in the examples of NATO’s activity in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya. By the mid-2020s the new strategy to ensure NATO’s global presence is based on the alliance’s involvement in the containment of the group of opponents of the West (first of all, Russia and China and also Iran). In this context the alliance tried to strengthen its position in post-Soviet space and the Near East and prepare to penetrate the Indo- Pacific region. Results. The article summarised the features of strategies of the globalisation of NATO’s activities and the Alliance’s return to its traditional aim at containment, but on the scale of the international arena as a whole.
Key words: NATO, strategic presence, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, post-Soviet space, IPR, containment.
