Abstract. Critical comprehension of the relationship between monastery and secular society is undertaken.The author gives a short historiographic review on the problem. The aspects of Byzantine monastic history which will help to define its role in the Byzantine society are revealed. Topical directions of Byzantine monastic history study on the issue of relationship between monks and laymen are identified.
