Abstract. The article dwells on the Russian policy in Central Asia in connection to Russian-American Relations of 1860–1870s. The theme proved to stimulate the interest of American audience due to investigations by American reporter J. MacGahan and diplomat E. Schuyler who turned out to witness Russian incursion into Central Asia. While giving some criticism both towards the methods of Russian administration on the spot as well as to Russian military atrocities, the reporters identified Russian policy in the region as the civilizing one. The article concludes American evaluation of Russian penetration into Asia to be in dependence on a group of factors, Russian sympathy in the Civil War and mutual aversion to England being the most evident.
Key words: Central Asia, foreign policy, the USA, diplomacy, international relations, XIX century.
