Abstract. Manning’s travel to Tibet in the XIX century is observed in the article, based on his traveling journal which contains important information about Chinese governing in the «Country of Snow» during the mentioned period. The author considers the travel as a scientific expedition, not as a stroke luck of a brave man. Manning’s observations of Tibet-Chinese relations presents a scientific value as his visit caused a «closing down» final of Tibet for Europeans.
Key words: Tibet, Dalai Lama, Ambans, Ch’ing Empire, China, Lhasa, xenophobia, officialdom, missionaries.
